Nutrition plays a crucial role in maintaining health and quality of life. As individuals age, the nutritional needs change due to factors like a slower metabolism, decreased muscle mass, and different lifestyle requirements. Geriatric nutrition requires a holistic approach. Meal plans should consider:

       •    Medical conditions

       •    Cultural preferences

       •    Socioeconomic factors

       •    Digestive health

       •    Dental health

Informed dietary choices are important to promote longevity and happiness.

Dietary Recommendations

       1.   Balanced Diet:   Focus on variety of foods. Include fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds that provide essential nutrients while managing calorie intake.

Key nutrients should include:

       a.   Protein:   for maintaining muscle mass and strength.

       b.   Calcium and Vitamin D:   for bone health.

       c.   Fiber:  Helps with digestion, prevent constipation.

       d.   Vitamin B12:   Some may have difficulty absorbing B12 from food.

       e.   Potassium: maintain proper cell function and may help lower blood pressure.

       f.   Healthy Fats

       g.   Iron:  Important for preventing anemia

       2.   Portion Control: Metabolism slows down with age, so calorie needs may decrease. Avoid empty calories and focus on nutrient-dense foods.

       3.   Hydration

       4.   Limit Sodium and Sugar

       5.   Regular Meals

       6.   Supplements:  Depending on dietary intake, supplements might be necessary.

       7.   Be physically active.

Swami has advised that the food should be simple, easy to digest and nourishing to promote inner peace. He has emphasized that food should be prepared and served with love.

It is important to keep Swami’s teaching in mind, especially while serving the elderly as we endeavour to do here in Swami's Hospital.

EXPERIENCES

mysterious are the ways of swami

By Sri Bharat Pandey, Sevadal Group Leader, Uttar Pradesh, SSSIHMS, Prasanthigram

Sri Bharat Pandey with his daughter at their home in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh

“I was going to Gorakhpur from my home at Ballia, UP, to drop my daughter back at her school after her summer vacation. From the train station we travelled in a 16-seater vehicle. As we hit the highway, I suddenly  realised that the vehicle was swerving to the left. To my horror I saw that the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel. When I woke up the driver, he panicked and turned the wheel in the opposite direction violently. The vehicle hit the road divider and leapt in the air, turned turtle and crashed on to the ground. I was thrown out of the vehicle.

When I regained consciousness, what I witnessed froze my blood. Lying on the road I saw my little daughter on the ground with the whole vehicle resting on top of her. I thought she was dead! I did not know whether I myself would survive. In that state, it pained me that if I were to die, I would not be able to go for Prasanthi Seva planned for the next month.

The next thing I saw was that the vehicle which was crushing my daughter was tossed onto one side of the road by some unknown force. To my amazement I saw my daughter alive and well she was picking up my wallet and my mobile phone from the road. “How Swami did this is still a mystery to me. I checked on my daughter, who I thought was dead a few moments ago. She did not even have a scratch on her body. Mysterious are the ways of Swami I thought.” And like every year that year too I  went for my Prasanthi Seva.

LOVE IN ACTION

a rare case of maffucci syndrome

By Dr. Prakash Khanchandani, Head of Department, Orthoapedics, SSSIHMS, Prasanthigram

Amrita, a 14-year-old girl from the state of West Bengal visited the Orthopaedics department of SSSIHMS, Prasanthigram, with multiple painful tumours on both her hands. The situation had become so painful that she could barely write, and it was worsening day by day.

After relevant scans and investigations at SSSIHMS-PG, the Orthopaedic surgeons realized that Amrita was suffering from an extremely rare genetic disorder called the Maffucci Syndrome

In this disorder multiple tumours called Enchondromas develop in small bones of the hands causing deformities. The deformities gradually increase leading to physical incapacitation for the patient, and these are dangerous as well since some of these tumours in due course, can have malignant transformation, if not timely removed.

Amrita underwent three complex surgeries and all the tumours of both the hands were removed. The resultant defects were filled with bone allograft procured especially for this her. The surgeries were followed by a supervised and home-based rehabilitation protocol.

Eventually, she was completely free of the tumours with no long-term recurrence. A girl who was not able to write with her hand, studied law and has become a successful lawyer. This is Bhagawan Baba’s love in action.

As with all treatment at Bhagawan Baba’s hospital this treatment was also provided totally free of charge.

Three surgeries were performed across a span of three years. The tumours were removed and the resultant area was filled up with bone allograft

Amrita was not even able to write, but now she is living a perfectly normal life.
