Gu in the word Guru, indicates the quality of Gunatheetha, that is, unaffected by attributes and attitudes, not associated with any one particular characteristic. And Ru means rupa-rahitha, that is, not limited to any form, pervasive in all forms. In this context, the Universe and all its components are to be looked upon as one’s preceptors and lessons learnt from each.

COVER STORY
RETINOPATHY OF PREMATURITY
By the Department of Ophthalmology, SSSIHMS, Prasanthigram
What is Retinopathy of Prematurity
Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is an eye disease that affects premature infants, particularly those born before 34 weeks or <1500gms at birth. Abnormal blood vessels start to develop in the retina, which can lead to blinding complications. Early detection and timely intervention can help prevent blindness.
Why should we screen for ROP
1. ROP is one of the leading causes of preventable childhoodblindness
2. ROP is not present at birth. Screening aims to identify those infants who, if untreated, may develop blindness or visual impairment.
3. Early recognition provides an opportunity for effective and appropriate treatment.
Which babies should be screened
1. Birth weight of less than 1500 gms
2. Gestational age at birth (length of pregnancy) of less than 34 weeks.
3. Exposed to oxygen for more than 30 days.
4. Infants weighing less than 1200 gms at birth and those born at 24-30 weeks gestational age are at particularly high risk
When to screen
1. 34 weeks post-conceptional age or 3-4 weeks after birth, whichever is earlier
2. One screening session should definitely be done before “Day 30” of the infant’s life
What is the treatment of ROP
Lasers/ Intraocular injections/ Surgery
EXPERIENCES
Sai: The Parabrahma
By SRI S. KANNAN, HEAD OF DEPARTMENT HMIS, SSSIHMS, Prasanthigram
Bhagawan Baba seen here with Sri S Kannan (third from right) during a trip to Kodaikanal.
It was Dasara in the year 1988. Swami was giving a discourse in the Poornachandra Auditorium. Being a part of the Vedam group, I was sitting behind Swami. During His discourse Swami suddenly stopped and started waving His hands in a ‘go away’ gesture to somebody in front of Him, invisible to us. We students looked at each other puzzled. Then Swami went down the steps, where we saw Brigadier S.K. Bose had fallen from his chair. There was some commotion. Swami slapped Brig. Bose’s shoulder thrice and told him to get up and then he became conscious again.
Swami then returned to the stage and continued His discourse. An engineer by profession, Swami had given him the responsibility of constructing the SSSIHMS, Prasanthigram, later.
Much later we came to know through Brig. Bose that he had in fact passed away that day and he saw that the celestial Garuda himself had come to take his soul to heaven. But Swami by His gesture sent Garuda away and re-instilled life back into Brig. Bose’s body.
I have quoted this incident here because on many occasions we do not understand why Swami does something or why He is creating a situation in our lives. In such situations, don’t think from your mind, think from your heart. Our Guru, our Swami, is the creator Himself. Every act of His has a deep meaning, so let us just surrender to Him.

THE PALATE PUSH BACK REPAIR SURGERY
SSSIHMS Team
A one - y e a r - old boy was brought to the hospital with a defect in the upper lip as well as the roof of the mouth since birth. The child was not able to suckle properly due to the deformity. Nor he could drink any liquid without regurgitating from the nose. In the first surgery the upper lip and the front portion were corrected. Later a second surgery was performed. In this surgery the gap in the roof of the mouth, which has the teeth -bearing bone was repaired.
According to Dr. D.V. Raghav Reddy, the Head of Department of Plastic Surgery at SSSIHMS, Prasanthigram, the palate was repaired using a special method known as the Palate Push Back Repair method. Using the method helps in better recovery of speech to the child. “I also advise parents who have children with similar deformities to never delay in getting the surgery done. The early the surgery, better the chances of good speech recovery,” Dr Reddy Said. As with all treatment at Bhagawan Baba’s hospital, this treatment was also provided totally free of charge.
